Irregular periods that last for weeks?

I have been having irregular periods for over a year now.
Then when I come on my period, it is either really heavy for the first few days and then discharge for a few weeks (until i get the pill to stop bleeding from doctor)
OR
I simply have bloody discharge for weeks
my mum has the same problem but she is in her 40's

There are several possible reasons for this problem. Fortunately, very few of them are anything to worry about without additional symptoms. You may have a hormonal imbalance, which can be caused by anything from increased stress, to weight loss, thyroid problems, etc. This could also be a symptom of endometriosis or fibroid tumors of the uterus (a common problem, especially in African Americans). Fibroids are benign (not harmful) masses of tissue that form in the uterus that may become big enough to cause vaginal bleeding. In more severe cases the uterus needs to be removed to stop the bleeding. Often, a D&C (dilation and currettage) can stop the bleeding or different kinds of hormonal birth control can re-regulate the hormones of the body. Definately go see your doctor to get an accurate diagnosis!
i personally would seek the professional help of a doctor to help diagnose the problem.
